I'll disagree here about "really cheap, but you have control".

I've rebuilt 2 Vanagon engines. Had the cases align-bored, heads rebuilt by AVP, new components throughout (either new, new or rebuilt new) except for the oil pumps. All in all the cost per engine was as much or more than buying from a reputable rebuilder.
