Subject: Vanagon engine conversion
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

So my wasserboxer finally crapped out a couple months ago. I knew the head gaskets were going as I was more and more frequently having to bleed compression blowby out of the cooling system. I decided to let it go because I new I was going to put a different motor in it when it gave out (overheated bad, no compression now). I was considering Subaru but after a bunch of research I decided to go with the VW i4 out of a Jetta or Golf so it could still be all VW. I bought a wrecked 91 Jetta GLI (parting out btw, cool OZ rims) and pulled the engine. Pulled the Vanagon engine last Sunday after pulling the Jetta engine. I soon realized that I didn't get the 1.8 motor I was looking for, it was a 16 valve 2.0 (GLI, duh!)... about 30 more horsepower than the 1.8 and about 50 more horsepower than the original 1.9 wasserboxer. But I've heard both good and bad things about this motor, mostly about having to hack the engine compartment to make room for the distributor. I'm sticking with the engine however... I have the KEP adapter and flywheel all bolted up. The Jetta is a CIS-E fuel injection system.. which I guess I'm going to learn about. Anyone out there done one of these or similar conversion? Any advise?

Thanks Mark
