Subject: '88 Vanagon - cruise control - problem fixed
Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed

Brief recap - Cruise control failed due to pin hole in vacuum servo unit. Had suggestions from the list to coat it with 'Amazing Goop', but didn't have any of that on hand, BUT did have tube of ordinary silicone sealer. So I washed off the surface of the rubber cone of the bellows to give it a little more to bond to and applied a generous coating of silicone sealer, let it cure for a day an 'WAAA LAAAA!' - Cruise control working again.

The rubber on that servo looked pretty cracked an on its last legs so I searched the Bus Depot for one and didn't find it under the Vanagon listing. I had a copy of ETKA5 so I looked there, found the part number, 811 907 326, and searched the Bus Depot's site again via part number and found the needed servo listed under a Jetta part. I went ahead and ordered one, cause I don't expect my fix to be permanent given the poor condition of the rubber membrane that I coated.

I checked with the local VW dealer's parts counter this morning. Their cost was 69.55, Bus Depot's cost was 61 and change. With the shipping added I'll come out just a couple of bucks less than buying it locally where I have to pay sales tax.

I'll probably cruise with my repaired unit just to see how long it will go since I will have a spare and could easily change it on the road if if failed.
