there is one school of thought which says an air-cooled vw engine, running the way it's supposed to, does not need an external oil cooler. the historic problem with the engine was a maladjusted exhaust valve on no. 3 cylinder. if it got outa whack, could blow a piston and worse. later models had self-adjusting hydraulic valves so that problem was resolved. i don't know, not a mechanic, and don't live where it's hot, but that same school of thought says a properly-running air-cooled engine should run as well in egypt as in alaska. best, art, san fran, '82 westy (air)
