The only way it could be 4" longer than the old one is if the old one was the WRONG one to begin with. Someone may have already replaced the original Marshall 260 with a single stage type that is not meant for motor vehicle use. The single stage ones are cheaper and smaller. The Marshall 290 family models are a little longer than the old 260 but only by an inch or so.

I have installed plenty of the newer 290 ones without problems.
