I can only speak for my model, which is an 82 with the manual bleed valve.   This is the small knurled-knob valve, to the right of the fill valve with the yellow cap.

I am not a propane expert and dont know all the exact procedure of connecting the pump hose, running the pump, and all that.  From our perspective on the vanagon side; you (the attendant) take off the yellow cap and connect the pump, you open the bleeder valve and pump in propane until the liquid begins to run out the bleeder.  The bleeder is at a height on the tank where the tank is 80% (or 90%? heard both ways) full, and the tank is filled until the liquid reaches this point; thus 80% (90%) full.  Once all the liquid that was overfilled has run out the bleeder, and vapor only is hissing out; you then close the bleeder.  The bleeder is there to be used as a "gauge" to prevent overfill.  This is how I understand the process, and how it has been done on my fillings; which were mostly uneventful until the last one when it was overfilled.
