It sounds like your idle isn't quite right .... that the engine isn't dropping to low enough RPM when you let off the gas.

My '84, with automatic, feels a lot like my '85 4 speed (in 4th) when I let off the gas at 45 mph. The engine, acting as a compression brake, slows the vehicle.
