Subject: FINALLY!! Intermittent stalling mystery solved. Thanks all!!

1981 Vanagon

Symptoms:

Would run fine, but 'randomly' would just quit. Any speed, and load.

Either it would start back up, or it wouldn't - no inbetween. When it started it fired right up.

Usually when it staled I could pull over and restart, but sometimes it wouldn't restart.

Sometimes would go 500 miles with no problem, then would get problems again.

Got feedback suggesting: 1-bad grounds 2-bad head temp sensor 3-bad double relay 4-clogged fuel line

AND THE WINNER IS............ bad head temp sensor.

The mystery is: the ohm readings were very close to spec at all temps tested. there was no loose connection (playing with wire could not reproduce stalling action). BUT I replaced the sensor and have driven 1500 miles w/ no problems (yet??).

After a while I realized that it only stalled out when the engine was warming up. It would be fine once up to running temp and when cool.

Thanks for all of your help!!

Steve
