Sorry for the tardy reply, vacations and swamped with vanagon related E-Mail.

The compartement, IN A WESTFALIA, is the one where the electrical cord is stored: while sitting on the rear bench on the driver's side, it would be at your left foot. It's the one with the smallish door, say 8" square or so.

Access to change the 10 or 12 CD magazine (not so often) is through the bottom of the storage bin immediately above.
