I think it must be an improvement in later models. The ignitor in my fridge seems to be a totally mechanical "trip hammer" type, where pressing the knob in causes an impact on a piezo crystal to generate the high voltage. To get a repeating effect, you'd need to use some kind of electronic circuit to generate the high voltage instead.
