The ECU is deeply involved with ignition in 1986 and newer model Vanagons with 2.1 Digifant. The signals from the hall unit go into the ECU and the ECU determines the timing based on that and other factors including the temp II sensor reading. It then pulses the coil as it deems appropriate. The ignition coil is driven by the ECU directly.

The earlier 1.9 Digijet system has a separate ignition module that does most of the work but this is built into the ECU in 86 and later Digifant models.
