A bad CV joint could definitely make this sound, and it would be consistent with it happening when turning, as this changes the weight distribution on the axles. However I can't see how doing the brake work would have caused the noise to subside for a while if this is what it was. You could try swapping the axles and see if the noise either goes away or moves to the other side of the van, either of which would point to a worn CV.
