This sure does sound like CV joint(s).

On my '84, when the joints were bad, the clunking would come and go to
some degree and sometimes I'd have to crawl under, grab an axle like a
javelin, and move it back and forth to get it to stop for a while.

Remember, if you have an automatic trans, you can't swap the axles from
side to side as they are of a different length.
