Amazing the vigilant vanagon experts on duty this weekend! I used the advice sent to me to discover the problem. I got under the car, put my ear close to the CV joints, rolled the affected wheel by hand and listened. I could hear it. then I noticed that, like a bicycle wheel with the brake pad hitting the rim on one spot, the wheel always wants to stop in the same place, coincident with the noise. The noise was not nearly as noticeable with the weight off the ground. There is, in fact, enough resistance to stop the wheel at that point. Another half foot-pound and it's "over the hump."

This is the inner joint, bolted to the transmission. How hard/easy is this to fix? Does the entire axle need to come out?
