Actually, The waterboxer can get the oil hotter than you think. Since it can run at over 4,000 rpm for long periods I've seen sump temps over 260F. VW realized a problem would develop with the 2.1 and that is why they added the oil cooler there. The oil and water temps are not always the same.

I could see the point if you're running an air-cooled engine. Vanagons with water boxers just don't run that hot (if the cooling system is running correctly).

I'd skip this little "innovation."
