Subject: Acceleration Problem, Can't Pass NYS Inspection

Hey everyone,

I have a problem, I thought my Vanagon from Florida, an 89 Auto Carat had the syndrome but it does not. It does however have a major problem according to the 2 mechanicıs I took it two.

The problem is that it can not pass NYS inspection due to a problem on the dyno test. The last part of the test where your vehicle is put into a simulated hill and it has to accelerate up the hill, the van canıt get enough power apparently to pass. This ever happened to anyone else?

The Mechanic says that when he drives it, itıs fine on the normal highway but he does notice that when he tries to floor it and get some power out to accelerate quickly it seems to loose power as if it went from 4 cylinders to 3.

He checked the plugs and they get strong spark, has a new fuel filter, oil filter, new spark plugs, and plug cables, new oxygen sensor, and a good air flow meter, any other ideas?

My thought was the the fuel injectors were clogged? I am open to suggestions?

Also I noticed when I filled it up after picking it up from the first shop, the fuel gauge said it was 3/4 full, but the pumpıs auto cutoff system cut me off which indicated to me it was full when I filled it up. Is that normal?

Another thing I noticed was that the stereo seemed to go in and out like it was losing power as I drove it to the second mechanic, could it be an intermittent electrical issue?

Lastly I want to replace all the rubber seals around the windows as they look like they are starting to get dry, any suggestions on where to get all of this rubber at a good price?

Thanks,

Robert NYC 89 Orly Blue Auto Carat
