Thermostats will fail open - and engine runs cold all the time, never getting to temp except maybe on the hottest of days.

Thermostats will fail closed - as shows as engine overheat, event when everything really is ok, except that coolant is not cooling because it is blocked by failed thermostat.

Thermostats are cheap enough to replace. Protect that engine!!!!!
