My '82 Vanagon uses a totally different key. The ignition key won't even fit in the lock. It's a diesel, though, so it would have a different cap. I get the same "safety feature" by putting my fuel cap key on the same ring as my ignition key. I like to shove the ignition key into the passenger side door lock and let the cap hang there while I fill up.
