Thanks for all of the great tips that are floating around, I didn't think I would get so many answers off of one list so fast! I'm at the point of rebuild that all I did was pull the heads off for machining. I know this is an all original engine still with about 30K - 50K miles (odometer was out for awhile). My cylinders are still on, Do I/ Should I pull the juggs off just to replace/add that barrell shim? Its been about 8 years since I've done a rebuild, if I pull the juggs and everything looks fine on the pistons and rings, do I just recheck the positioning of the rings, toss on the shim and reload the juggs? If rings are cheap I might as well replace them right? Or am I starting to mess up the flow with putting new parts on an aged situation? Thanks for the knowledge.

those sealing rings are not to be used anymore. VW did a service update in this regard. You barrell shim the cylinder and do not use that head gasket.

I have decided to do my own rebuild. One question on the heads, where the head meets the cylindar (jugg), there appears to be a ring or spacer on the head - one of which is pealing. What is the part and where do I get them?

Thanks Jeremy
