Subject: RE: Problems with your van
Hi Joel,
I spoke with Dave from Vintage Auto today. He says the van is fixed. It
seem that the suggestions you got from other members were right on, and I
think we were on the right track.
He says the grounds to the engine block were not good, even though they
looked okay. Also, the O2 sensor was, indeed, shot. It would give okay
data for a couple minutes until it warmed up, and then it went down to
nearly zero. Simply disconnecting it allowed it to go into default mode,
which allows the engine to run okay (until I replace it). He also noticed,
as we did, that the wiring harness was a mess. He opened it up, and found
up to six splices on a single wire (with no soldering)!! He fixed those, so
hopefully I won't have a fire anytime soon.
Thanks for your help with the van, now I only have to get the appliances
working! I'll sign up and thank the vanagon.com members.
Also, if you think that van in Buffalo is still available, or if you hear
about any inexpensive vans for sale, please let me know. Thanks, Jeff
Oh, also, we can arrange a time tonight or next week to get your AFM and ECU
back. I'll be in Fairhaven until Monday.

Subject: Problems with your van
Jeff,
How did you make out with getting the van in a shop?
I sent a request to the Vanagon.com group and got the following
responses.
The best one is the cracked in the exhaust manifold. If there is a leak
from a crack in the manifold it will mess everything up.
The fuel pressure distributor is a possible culprit. But I don't think
that
your injectors need to be tested, the engine runs too smoothly and I
believe
that all are running well.
The connections at the distributor for the hall sender looked good.
The O2 sensor may also be the culprit since I did not see the higher
readings that I get on mine, like .7 to .8 volts rather than .2 and .3
as I
saw on yours. The O2 readings will wonder and cycle from 0 to .7. Some
of
the guys are talking about checking the wiring on the O2 as well. This
little sensor does quite a lot to keeping the engine running smooth.
Laurence reiterates the ground wire to the head. Check that connection
again for corrosion. If that big black battery wire is green with
corrosion
it is probably not making a good contact any more. Replace it.
Let me know what you find out.
Joel
