I have a weekender-type van, and I think it is better for me. Personally, I like the full-width bed and extra space. I use my van as a daily driver, and to carry lumber & deliver furniture, and to camp in with the wife and dogs. Two people and two large dogs need the extra space. It is brighter inside, too. I also have a lighter weight van without the westy paraphernalia, and it is quite nimble with the Tiico engine.

When I camp, all my stuff goes into big plastic tubs, so I can stack and arrange them to suit my needs at any time. For example, on the way to camp I will stack them where the westy stuff is usually located, or in the rear cargo area. At camp, I can take it all out to use it or move it where I need it. At bed time, I put the tubs up front on the seats and stretch out on the big bed. It's worth the trouble of moving stuff around to have the extra room.
