There's a lot on that list that could apply to any car.

The Cabriolet has a lot in common with the Scirocco. Check to see if <http://www.scirocco.org> has any tips. That site also has the instructions for the Scirocco list. Questions about all A1 chassis VWs (the Cabriolet is an A1) are welcome, and there are lots of Cabriolet owners there.

The only thing specific to the Cabriolet that I can think of to check is the top. If its in bad shape, you are looking at $500 in parts + a lot of labor to replace it. It would be a good idea to look for signs of water damage from the inside, since the tops can leak (especially if left open in a rain storm!). By '84 I think VW had moved the brake lines out of the passenger compartment, so you don't have to worry about interior water rusting them like on the older ones, but there's still a lot of rust and mold that can result from getting water inside.
