did the dirty deed, old leaking cylinder still looks like new (FAG brand, VW and Audi casting marks ground off).

It was only about 4 years old.

Bled (not enough, pedal engages too soon) a lot of dirty fluid. This is of course a no brainer, but one should replace those fluids more than once every 4 years!.

New slave cyl (around Ca$90) looks like its Italian, but I could find no verifying marks.

Will bleed some more tomorrow, too lazy tonite to set up my pressure bleeding apparatus. In the past, on mine and other Vanagons. I have power bled the clutch forwards and backwards. Forwards first, pressurising the reservoir and flushing the lines, then backwards from the bleeding nipple to get any recalcitrant bubbles out of system.

Mind you I have also had good luck with the "slow drip from nipple" method of bleeding the clutch system.
