An Econoline E150 2 wheel drive with a 302 cid can get milage that's nearly as good as a carburated VW bus, though not quite as good as a Vanagon. (17-19 mpg) Still has the turning circle of a lake freighter, though. ;) Steering is pitman arm and not nearly as nimble as a Vanagon. Older models with twin I-beam suspension chew up front tires. Still, if I needed more space and realiability than a Vanagon, or needed to tow something, a Ford van with a good camper conversion would likely be high on the list of choices.
