Hi Bob,
I have very recently re-wired (partially) behind my dash
after an electrical short circuit and resulting small fire -
thankfully nothing serious!
There is a thick bundle of wires that goes from front to the
back of the vehicle on the left (driver's) side, presumably
feeding the engine and rear lights among other things. It
passes down from the fuse box area, going through the front
bulkhead just above and inside the driver's side headlight.
This bundle of wires is sheathed in a black PVC tube. I
don't imagine it would be possible to run your wires inside
the tube but it probably provides a very good route for the
new wires -try clipping them to the outside of the PVC
sheath using cable ties. Beware though ... the bundle of
wires will probably pass over the fuel tank.
The entry through the front bulkhead, behind the dash, could
be arranged either by passing the wires, still on the
outside of the PVC sheath, through the large rubber grommet
that makes the seal to the bulkhead, or by making a separate
hole and installing a new grommet. I would choose the first
option.
Alternatively, you could try threading your wires through
another sheathed bundle of cables, this time the ones for
the driver's side headlight and turn indicators. This PVC
sheath is much shorter and you would probably have a better
chance of threading two small cables through it than you
would with the larger, more tightly packed main cable bundle
I mentioned above.
It's easy to find all these wires, sheaths and grommets from
the outside of your Vanagon by removing the upper "radiator
grille".
I am always aware when posting that my (English) English may
differ from others' English, including yours, so please ask
me to explain any terms that are not familiar, and feel free
to ask any other questions you wish.
Best regards,
Tony
