Gregory; I belive it's purpose is to bypass the marority of the coolant flow away from the tank, only allowing air bubles (mostly) into the tank. Sounds like you came up with a perfect fix because: A The system can accomplish it's goal of sending air to the tank, it probably works even better know. B. You reduced the number of parts involved. (The Digifant system works like this) C. You saved money.
