FWIW: I lived outside Cheyenne WY for 4 years (95-99)and my house was at 7,500 ft and I frequently got to 8,200 ft.  Occasionally I would reach over 12,000 ft.  Not once did I encounter a problem with the thinning air. Well the van didn't (90 GL, 2.1l, air flow wiring mod installed).  Living there takes about 6 weeks to acclimate. (*sp?*)

As far as the air filter solution goes, it sounds like a dirty air filter problem and the thin air only made the problem worse.
