The AFM has nothing to do with the fuel pump on your model. On air cooled models it did but not on the watercooled. The 87 fuel pump is controlled by the ECU. The ECU is connected to the fuel pump relay and turns the relay on on off as it deems necessary. If you have a volt meter you can try to track down the problem. You need a helper to turn the key on and off as the fuel pump does not always have power. The ECU gives it power for a few seconds when the key is first turned on and from then on only when the ECU sees hall pulses from the distributor. Of course a fuel pressure gauge might tell you if you were barking up the wrong tree.
