Just curious: did you measure the voltage with both bulbs in place? They
should be to make a proper measurement. Then with a raise of 2.5 volts
you should have a considerable increase in light.
One of the disadvantages of the vanagon headlights I found was the fact
that they are quit high above the road. So you have to choose between a
lot of light just in front of the van, or a lot of light further away
(by adjusting the lampunit).
My '87 Caravelle (Europe) used to have the single round lights, I
replaced them by the double square one's (as in your Carat I suppose).
To protect the switch I also bypassed it with relays, and I had a lot
more light!
Then I installed foglights beneath the bumber, to illuminate the road
just in front of the van. Works fine.
