Sounds to me like you need to look at http://gerry.vanagon.com/cgi-bin/wa.exe?A2=ind9509&L=vanagon&P=R21806 which would sort out your problem. > So has anyone tried a voltage amplifier the by passes the stock wire > harness and starts at the battery. > If the works my starter may be good for awhile longer. > I got one off evelbay that works for the Vanagon; Looks to me like that's not a voltage amplifier, but a pre-made kit to do what is outlined in the page I quoted above. Only difference is you pay $16.75 (incl. shipping etc) instead of buying a simple relay, an inline fuse and few bits of wire and the required connectors. I've done this using a bog-standard 30amp rated relay - cost me about UKP 4.50 in total. Hate to p**s on your chips, but you've been had! ;-) > I'll let you know how it works or suffer a new starter. Please do. If you want to be able to start the Vanagon from the engine compartment so save walking to the front all the time, you could even fit a flick switch in parallel with the relay to make life easier. With the ignition switched on it would start the engine - without the ignition it'll turn the engine over, for instance for compression testing etc. -- Tim PGP Key ID: 525e6a47 Available from http://pgp.mit.edu |
