Haven't done this myself, but have seen pictures and summaries of the work. All have said it looks like a major task, butr not so bad in reality. Get everything ready, then devote a Saturday to it. Should be able to get it our and back in with no porblem.

One thing, you didn't mention what your heater core problem seemed to be. There are a number of things that will indicate a heater problem, but may be fixable without going to all that trouble.

Finally, if there is a problem that requires removal, do a comple overhaul of the heater box and system while you are in there. Motor, seals, wiring upgrade, and heater switch relays. It's worth it.
