Normal?  Well it shouldn't be.  Pretty common but very easy and cheap to
fix.  The valve cover gaskets are the same ones used on the old aircooled
Bugs (Type 3s, Ghias and Vans up thru '71).  The valve cover is held on by a
clip.  Pop the clip and the cover should come right off.  Remove the old
gasket, clean up the cover, lay the new gasket in (VW says no sealant is
necessary but a thin bead of sealant helps hold the gasket in place).  Clean
up the mating surface on the head and reinstall the cover.  If you study it
real hard and move very slow it will take you less than 30 minutes for both
sides.  A little longer if you let the sealant set.  Don't put sealant on
the head side because it makes it tough to change it next time.
