I live in Montreal, Qc, Canada, where there is a lot of ice hiden under the snow. There is probably a little little advantage to drive a manual in winter. The real advantage is the syncro. Period! Come on! One wheel pushing this big beast! And 3 stuck in the snow. The only next best thing after the syncro is good winter tires.

I drove my 91 automatic vanagon GL 8 passenger with driver's heated seat the whole first winter with it (1996/97 winter) for lack of money to have a beater. I really liked driving it in the winter! Why? Cause my previous car was a 87 Toyota van, front engine and rear wheel drive. Ha! That was the problem. ALWAYS STUCK!

One thing that I did not like about driving the vanagon is that I really felt like the front end was lighter than a front engine car. So I felt like it was not cornering when I wanted to. I had to slow down more than my other cars before a turn to avoid going strait ahead.

The other reason is rust. So the next year I bought a 87 golf beater. Now this golf is in Heaven... cause of the rust.
