Something that i've noticed driving my vanagon for the
past 9 years or so is that you kind of have to "feel"
the engine and not super-floor it all the time.  On
the exact same hill, if you've driven a little easier
on the way up to it, you can cruise right up in
fourth, while in very similar conditions if you are
busting ass to get somewhere, you'll have to drop down
to third gear up the same hill.

Both my dad and i have noticed this phenomena when
driving my '84.  It still exists even with the bigger
engine (but i just don't have to down shift), so this
leads me to think it is somewhat of a universal
phenomena...

What could cause this?  A conversation i had with a
list member a while back mentioned something about
crank case pressure robbing power, in passing, but i
don't really know much about that at all.  Could this
cause anything like that?
