In a word, No. The proper procedure is with a CO measurement.

How will you know it's close??? Too lean, overheat, burn pistons. Too rich, carbon fouling, and gas fouling of the oil. In both cases it can seem to be running just fine and damage might build slowly over time, unseen.

There is one good thing about tinkering, it's cheaper than any other alternative right up to the point of failure.
