Subject: Sunday morning, radiator change
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII

Good morning all,

I am replacing the radiator in my son's 84 Vanagon this morning. I have the old one out. I'm looking for any advice and information about this process. I will search the archives in a minute but thought I'd see if anybody wanted to help by typing some info in now.

The new radiator from Bus Depot is from South Africa and is much lighter. It appears to be an exact replacement and has VW marking on it.

I took the rubber cups off the corners of the old one and transfered them to the new one. I plan on sanding and painting the fan shroud.

There is a brass screw at the top of the radiator. Is this a bleeder screw and how do I fill the system back up? I've seen and read many postings of jacking the back of the Vanagon up and running without the pressure cap on while filling the tank at the back. The rpm's are suppose to be kept up above idle right?

Is there a quick check for the thermostat? I forgot to order a new one. Am I suppose to use a sealant around the threads?

Should I rig up a flush and flush out the entire system now?

Thanks. John.
