Subject: Archive FAQ compilation (was Matthew's website offline)
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

This raises, yet again, a concern many have expressed on the list. What can we do as a group to preserve this information? I would propose that we submit some mirror sites where information and websites can at least be backed up until the documentation project grows legs of it's own. I know many of us have hosts (servers) we control that can provide the space for mirroring data.

The archives are a great source of information. Individual websites are another tremendous source of information. When I go to tripod or aol etc hosted website I always fear that the information may go away. To the hosting company it is as simple as cleaning up old accounts where the original author has lost interest. For those of us just coming into the wonderful? world of vanagons the information these websites contain is invaluable.

Ideally the solution would be a published archive where individuals can submit write-ups etc for reference by others. A nice example of the archive idea is the faq's at http://www.swedishbricks.net/contents.html . I would be happy to contribute construction, host space for mirrors, etc to the archive publishing effort. There are nice open source tools to support this. See some of the post nuke (free open source content management system) websites for an example of what vanagon.com can be extended to. Xoops is another very nice open source tool. A knowledge base. The vanagon.com site is good. I am certainly not bashing it. I am concerned that the information becomes stale. We ask enough of Tom to maintain this list and the site as it is now.

I know this is a continuation of the archive thread started a month or so ago. When I saw bulley's site was offline it stirred me to action. That was a nice write-up on fighting rust. I had planned to return to his site for sound proofing if/when I am ever through sorting out engines.

Some excellent resources (folks) come along on this list and contribute greatly. Some, like Stan Wilder, sell their vanagon and pursue other interests. It would be nice to capture some of the knowledge they contribute so that future vanagon enthusiasts can benefit from their knowledge. Something easier weeded through than the archives.
