Not sure what mega-squirt costs, but I've had real good luck with the Haltech engine management system. Mine is an E6s that runs off a DOS floppy of about 600kb, but the new ones can be programmed with Windows and you get 3D graphs of all the fuel and timing maps. When you price a new VW ECU, and you like to tinker, the cost is real reasonable.
