I have just installed a rack that has probably been Gary Lee's worse
nightmare to build. Countless emails, a visit in person and again countless
more emails resulted in a work of art, form and most of all function!
REQUIREMENT #1 - Ramps
Where I live, there are a lot of trees and logging roads. Most of the good
logging roads have been deactivated but the logging company putting a big
ditch across the road so you can drive right on in, or sometimes the forces
of erosion makes the road impassable. So I usually take along some
aluminium ramps that I can make into a small bridge, help me get unstuck or
make a sloping road a little easier to deal with. I have never had a great
place to store these other than next to the sliding door and in everyone's
way. I needed a place to put these on the outside of my Westfalia.
REQUIREMENT #2 - Pioneer Kit
Often times there is a tree across the road that needs to be removed.
Sometimes there is a hole that needs filling. I find a shovel and an axe a
great thing to take along when you are offroading. But, I don't want these
in the inside of the van due to safety reasons.
REQUIREMENT #3 - Platform
I like taking different things to different places. Sometimes I want more
fuel, sometimes I want to take a chainsaw, or a BBQ... I need a place
outside of the van to put this
REQUIREMENT #4 - Hi-Lift Jack
Now that I have 31" tall tires, the factory jack is totally useless. A 48"
hi-lift is much better suited for this tall of a vehicle. It can also be
used as a winch if you have a length of cable. Two tools in one!
All of these requirements have been put together neatly on one of Gary's
ladder style racks. The ladder style rack was necessary because of my rear
mounted spare tire. For those who want to see this beautiful work of art
with all the toys attached, please go the Gallery section of

I can't recommend Gary enough - great guy, great work! Thank you!
