I am running WVO (Waste Veggie Oil) in my TD Jetta and will soon be driving
a WVO Syncro Single Cab and Syncro Westfalia once things slow down here.
I am still in the experimental stages on my TD Jetta - I am not running a
"hose in a hose" system, but an electrically heated system. For those who
do not know, the WVO must be heated to at least 60 to 70C in order that it
is thin enough for the injector pump. My electrical heater does a good job
until the outside temp gets to about 10C then it can't keep up. Total
investment so far is about $100 - some fuel line, a electrically controlled
switch, out board motor tank and a 12V electric heater strapped to a metal
fuel filter.
I am making a aluminum tank for the trunk of my Jetta that will hold 82L (
1/3 more than the original tank ) and there will be a coolant powered heater
in side of this to bring the oil temp up before it leaves the tank. I am
also experimenting with various coolant / fuel hose designs so that the WVO
is heated between the tank and the injector pump as well. The electrical
heater will still be there as I want this thing to run down to -30C if need
be. The heater will come on only if it is needed as it draws nearly 30A and
it is hard on the electrical system if you don't have a large enough
alternator.
After the TD Jetta is running and debugged, I will be doing the same for the
Vanagon. Again, making an auxiliary tank from aluminum that is heated by
coolant.
Do I like running on WVO? In a word - YES! I get the stuff for free and I
notice no difference in power, slightly less smoke on acceleration, better
for the environment and did I mention I get the stuff for free!!!
The hardest thing about it is processing the oil. I have two 130L garbage
buckets that I let the WVO sit in for about 1 week to let the fish and chips
settle to the bottom. Then, I use a power steering pump powered by a
washing machine motor to draw the oil from the top and force it through a
hydraulic filter that filters down to 10 microns. After it is filtered, I
store it in 20L buckets until it is time to pour it into the tank. If you
don't prefilter it, you will clog your car's filter in no time.

Who out there is running WVO(waste vegetable oil), and how do you like it? I
want to convert a vehicle, but have not found a suitable victim(vehicle)
yet. I am particularly interested in hearing from those in cold climates as
I am in Alaska.

Many states her now charge more for Diesel. Taxed higher due to
increased road wear caused by trucks.

Diesel higher than gasoline???? Wow - here
0.639/l for Diesel
0.859/l for Gasoline
waste veggie oil is still free! :)
