Both Yakima and Thule make extensions that fit in their load bars. You pull the extension out so it's a few feet out from the side of your van. You lift one end of your boat and support it on the extension (there's an upright to keep it from falling off) --- then you got to the other end of your boat and lift it onto the rack at the other end --- then slide the end of the boat being supported by the extension on to the rack at the end with the extension --- then slide the extension bar back into the rack. Yakima calls it a Boatloader and Thule calls it an Outrigger Lift Assist. I think they're pretty cool and plan to get one when I decide which rack to spring for. Cheers, Doug

Tim, What type of kayaks are you trying to put on top of your Westy? I am 6'2" and have not figured out how I could ever get our fiberglass tandem sea kayaks on top of our 87 Westy Syncro w/o a ladder and/or hoist. Then again when we take the boats out we are going where the Westy can't and would leave it home, the Jeep is much easier(lower) to put boats on. I have thought about a trailer, but would have to build it myself as shipping the pre-made kits to Alaska is expensive. Besides I would probably want to custom build one with personalized options and out of Aluminum for the weight savings. Vanagons are underpowered enough with out the weight of a trailer and gear. Mark in AK 87 Westy Syncro Hey all, I use the gutter mounts adapters in the rear attached to the bolts for the hinges for the pop-top, and use the tall towers up front. and the tall towers in the front. Lemme know if you need more info. ...JMM Justin M. Mayrand 1980 Westy "SuperVan"
