The cheapest and BEST course is to have a local machine shop check out the head while it is off.

In my experience in ... MGB, Ford 9N, Ford 8N, multiple Rabbits (both gas and diesel), multiple Jettas (both gas and diesel), multiple Vanagons... all have been worth the money paid to the machinist in peace of mind and reassurance in either owning/using or selling the vehicle. That is my opinion and if/when you are experienced, it will be yours, too.

Head welding by a professional is almost always a good alternative to new purchases... ask me how I know. YMMV.
