Works great. Just make sure you use something frangible, and fasten it down well. I see some people using concrete blocks and that scares me.

When I lived in the upper peninsula and drove a big Ford van I used to go to the grocery store in October or so and buy two big bags of the cheapest cat litter I could find to throw in the back. A side benefit was I could scatter it under the wheels for traction if I got stuck on ice.
