I once pulled the instrument cluster harness from an '85 Golf with MFA; on this there was a brown wire(which in all my "research" is the color of VW grounds). This brown wire lead to a bunch of other brown wires; crimped and soldered together in what sounds like the same fashion as your Vanagon. So I'd think those would be factory grounds.
