I must suggest NEVER to hit the end of the axel, always use a drift on the CV inner hub. Either that or a proper press set up for the rare ones that are burred from excess wear of the splines. If a dozen whacks with a 5 pound hammer and drift won't move it more than a 1/4", I head to the press. I've done dozens and dozens of these removals and only once needed a press, so it is very rarely needed but indeed happens.
