Is there a list somewhere of engines that can directly replace the 1.9 wasserboxer? Or replace it with MINIMAL conversion? I'd like to eventually put a stronger engine in Beatrix, but would like to keep the cost under $3000.

Direct replacement is possible only with the same engine. Minimal would be a relative term. I keep a few on my links page though I haven't updated for a while. See if there's anything there that suits your fancy and budget.
