Rick,

Not suer what year and model you are dealing with, but if it is at all like any of the various VW guage that I have played with, there is no need to remove the tach needle. The guage should be removable after removing the blue flexi circuit board and then removing the tach assembly. I don't have one in front of me, but I recall it being straightforward with the guage held to the back of the tach with two phillips screws.
