Mark,

I'm pretty sure your injectors are separated from the mayhem of combustion and flying debris by the valves. When the injectors are exposed to that violent area, there should be a pretty good breeze sucking debris away.

I don't know a lot about the Vanagon fuel injection, but I think there are two electrical connections shared by the four injectors.

A bad wire makes more sense to me than floating nastiness.
