The retroreflective tape and reflectors are well worth the effort. My former breakdown van, T4 LWB, was covered in the tape which actually got pretty bright in certain conditions, dusk on the highway with trucks comeing. However, don't assume that you will be seen. I nearly got hit once even though the van was parked off the road at an angle with every warning light on and traffic cones deployed.
