Depends on the weather. Typically they draw 700 watts or so. My point is, there is no need to leave it plugged in all night, even if it's minus 30. Plug it in when you park it, turn the breaker off from inside the house. Flip the breaker on when you get up in the morning and your engine will be pre heated to a startable temp. by the time you are ready to leave. They are meant as a starting aid, not as an "instant heat" device. If you're the type who's upa nd aut in 15 minutes or less, then use a timer.

If you're stuck without one in a sudden cold snap, a trouble light with a 100 watt bulb bungeed under the oil pan and an old blanket on top of the engine will work too, but leave it on all night, and don't forget to remove it before starting.
